What is Lenticular?
Morphing Lenticular GraphicIt is a piece of ribbed plastic with lenticules running vertically - ranging from 15 line per inch to 150 line per inch. Each rib is a lens. Each lens is set up according to viewing distance, depth and field of view through a logarithmic process commonly known as 'interlacing'. This assists in incrementally developing the movement that the brain interprets and the eye 'appears' to see.
Thicker lenses make better 3D, thinner lenses fit in more animation frames.
I hear the extended version of cs4 has lenticular suppot and there are 3rd pty solutions like Human Eyes which feature a 60 day free mac trial!

new site for nike with video launched on moving blocks. Simple idea but effective.
Chatting with gts yesterday about methods of extending your folios..
We were looking at the Hussein Chalayan piece called Ambimorphous AW/2002-2003
(grab here from a Show Studio interview vid..)
Its a backlit still image in the Design Museum show but what was good for us is the proportional relationship between the wall and the viewer. We were wondering if a folio could be virtually displayed on a screen and have pages that turn and open out into motion work etc. Hard to implement but there could be a rapid prototyped group of 4 white figures in a row holding open folios at oversize scale and hard cropped top and bottom so just the folio is mainly featured.
This could be projected over with the digital content.
Tony Oursler (above) is a well-known exponent of this technique of projection over objects in the fine art world and I know some of you experimented with this in l2 last year.
Just working with some new software which can make multi-touch (similar to) projections and also does interesting things with text - more to come on this. Also can be controlled with graphics tablets and wii-motes. If we use in the show I don't want others to be too aware of this just yet but as we are a closed blog for now I will post some tests soon. Will be taking it for a test drive at an event at Shunt next month so will see..
update 24th march: software as yet too buggy to rely on for a week long show - awaiting updates
There are several sites that track colour trends in every aspect of life and society as well as those you might expect in fashion. Here's Colour Lovers who map everything from Christmas foods to this month's Rio Carnival.
Here' Adobes colour site Kula (needs latest flash installed)
This site has less scope but deals with collections of colourways well.
..another Colour Combinations which includes web colours as well as pantones etc.
Pantones guides in uk are here and here's the Pantone website.
At the Hussein Chalayan Design Museum exhibition they used some office-style vertical blinds link to break up the space in places and to kill the light spill between regions. Both black and sometimes white and sometimes both in layers, over a 3-4 metre drop and out of the context of the office they become a very appealing alternative to building walls.
Show designers Block Architecture explain in bdonline ..
For this, Chalayan’s first solo show in the UK, the main gallery has been divided into separate spaces around a central core, each showing a selection of dresses from past collections. The conceptual nature of Chalayan’s pieces makes for an intense show, with the small space crammed full of ideas. Block’s job was “to not over-design”, says Smith. “We pared down the materials to create more of a backdrop, with creative visual referencing to hold it.”
The double-height space is sectioned by tall, slatted curtains which move in the breeze and enable visitors to flow from room to room rather than feel hemmed in. These, and the pebble-like surface of quartz and marble, were ideas taken from an installation Block designed to show Chalayan’s summer collection at Mayfair’s Dover Street Market last year.
Plenty to note exhibition-wise here - tacky retro wallpaper overlayed with vinyl graphics, simple, clever graphics by Abake studio. Multi screen projection, backlit images split into process seperations on acetate to give them depth.
I'm popping down to the design museum on monday 23rd with Geoff and anyone from the show group who wants to.. link here
